“It’s Your Choice”

(A poem on the ill effects of drinking): Saloni Chawla

No, I shall not tell you not to drink, for, you are not a kid !

Go ahead and have fun, make merry – Gin and Rum –finish the bottle, lick even the lid.

You’ll see the results in your dancing gait;

in temper tantrums entering your personality trait;

in the mirror on your wall, reflecting the changes in your handsome face;

in accidents that would kill and in handcuffs around your wrists;

in bank balances that would shrink turning away an elegant circle

that was once your pride.

You’ll see the results in your mother’s wail

and in your father’s woeful tale,

and if married, in your wife’s

face – pretty, yet pale,

and in your children’s future –

turning bleak and frail.

You’ll see the results

in your hospital bills,

in X-rays and many

an Ultrasound report;

A visit to Switzerland –

you might have dreamt all along,

but a long hospital stay

would be a guarantee resort !

About what next –

I’ll better keep mum,

for the soil of your life would

have been irrigated with rum.

Well, not to worry, for,

that day would be fun !

You’ll be all by yourself :

isolated, independent –

on the peak of the hill that

you yourself chose to treck.

No, I’m still not telling you

not to drink……..

Your life is yours

Whether you swim or you sink!
